The conference was organized by the Society for AIDS in Africa (SAA) under the theme “Own, Scale-Up and Sustain”.

SWAA Ghana was represented by the President, Ms. Nancy Ansah, the Treasurer, Ms. Angelina Ephraim and the Immediate Past President, Mrs. Cecilia Senoo.

Ms. Lucy Mensah, a SWAA member and President of Women United Against AIDS in Ghana (WUAAG) was also at ICASA, 2011.

The 16th ICASA conference was well attended by over 7,000 participants from around the world. Heads of States, Ministers, First Ladies, heads of civil society organizations and various policy makers in the area of HIV and Reproductive Health were present.

His Excellency W. Bush, Ex-President of the United States of America was the Guest of Honour. He was accompanied by his wife. The Ex-President was honoured for instituting PEPFAR which saved millions of lives who otherwise would have died of AIDS.

The main advocacy issue at the conference was the need for African countries to increase domestic/government funding for HIV & AIDS which will ensure ownership of HIV & AIDS programming; prevention, treatment, care and support.

This is crucial in the wake of the cancellation of Global Fund round 11. Countries were called upon to ensure that the gains made in fighting HIV & AIDS are not eroded. At the end, the Global fund assured all People Living with HIV that though the Global Fund round 11 is cancelled, the Global Fund will ensure that everybody on treatment continues to be on treatment.

At the conference, SWAA Ghana participated in networking activities; AWDF lunch with partners, SAA’s strategic planning launch and SWAA International meeting. The SWAA International meeting was critical for SWAA Ghana and other SWAA delegates to make suggestions on the way forward for SWAA International.

It was announced that SWAA International will hold its biennial conference in Zambia in September, 2012.
