The President, Ms Nancy Ansah, and the Immediate Past President, Mrs. Cecilia Senoo participated in USAID AWARE II End of Project Meeting between June 11-13, 2012 at the Sakarawa Hotel, Togo.

Mrs. Cecilia Senoo represented the Coalition of NGOs in Health, where she is the Vice Chair.

Participants were from over 18 countries in Africa.
The Health Minister of Togo, in his welcome address mentioned that many diseases had faced his country before which, for the dedication of community workers, health workers and the support of development partners like USAID, some have been eradicated.

He commended USAID for the support granted to the Togo through the Action for West Africa Region (AWARE) Phase II and the Engender Health projects which have helped in improving maternal and child health.

The Action for West Africa Region (AWARE) Phase II is a USAID/West Africa’s flagship project that worked to create an enabling environment in the region which then allowed WARE II to effectively implement selected high quality health service delivery (programmes) at the county level.

According to the documents of USAID, most projects interventions were executed through integrated packages of health (FP/RH); HIV & AIDS; and maternal, newborn and child health.

Each of these intervention packages were validated in Togo although they were designed for 21 countries in West Africa and Central Africa.

The programme accomplished the following success:

  • Conducted, in that very conservative region, a successful pilot project which demonstrated that well trained and adequately supported community health workers could effectively boost FP coverage ratios by correctly providing pills, injectables, and other non-hormonal FP methods. Within seven months, 9,000 women were reached with contraception.
  • Supported local NGOs in obtaining 12 West African Ambassadors Fund grants and using these grants to implement selected best practices in HIV & AIDS RH/FP in eight countries
  • Developed a factsheet for each of the 21 countries that provide an overview of the nations’ demographic, health challenges, current health programmes and supporting donors.
  • Achieved significant policy changes through advocacy -By advocating for health policy, USAID AWARE II inspired the Togolese Ministry of Health to authorize Community Health Workers to distribute antibiotics, oral and injectable contraceptives. The project worked with civil society partners as well as religious, traditional and government leaders to develop advocacy tools to educate their communities about HIV & AIDS and RH/FP and improve national health policies, among others.
